THE BORDER: Generally speaking, the Canadian Customs Officers at our local land crossings understand that most of the people coming across are happy vacationers. Proof of citizenship is a big issue for both sides of the border and a drivers license is not suitable on it’s own. A birth certificate along with photo ID is acceptable. A passport is mandatory if arriving by air. You will require the same ID for getting back into the States. Our over-seas guests are still fine to use current passports. Please see http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html for more information.
To help you have a pleasant experience at the border, we have included a few tips. This is by no way intended to get you through the border more quickly than any one else or to plug any one store over another, we have only included this for your convenience.
- Do NOT bring handguns into Canada.
- When bringing rifles, shotguns or archery equipment across the border, ensure they are unloaded and in a case.
- If asked to present your firearms, allow the Customs officer to remove it from your vehicle, DO NOT handle or point it at them at the Officer.
- Do not bring anything with soil attached, like plants or potatoes.
- Cuban cigars are available at the Duty Free Store on the Ontario side.
DUIs & Charges - find out about entering Canada if you have had prior charges before making the trip. You could get turned back if you don’t have a pardon.
SHOPPING: There’s a grocery store and a LCBO in Emo. There is also a Wal-mart in Fort Frances on your way west out of town on the North side of the Hwy., it’s very easy to find, although they don’t carry meat or produce, they do have the typical Wal-Mart selection of everything else. There is also a grocery/liquor store, 2 tackle shops & Post Office, a few restaurants, 2 marine repair shops and 2 gift shops here in Nestor Falls.
